The Emmaus Place Story
The journey of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church began in 1974 and included in the charter documents a dedication and commitment: “In gratitude to God we pledge ourselves to support with all abilities at our command, the work and witness of the church in this community.”
In 1984 the church dedicated its current building to continued mission and ministry. The original property extended north of the church building and in 2003, when land to the north was wanted for housing, that piece was exchanged for property to the west. With that exchange of land, church members commented, “someday we will build something for seniors.”
In 2009, a committee researched zoning, traffic flow and details related to possible housing which was presented to the congregation. The report wisely recommend that any development be preceded by a clear vision and mission plan, resulting in the entire congregation considering “Who is God calling us to be and what is God calling us to do, at this time, in this place?”
One of the objectives of the church was to “revisit the need for the surplus land and how it can be developed to meet the needs of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and its role in the community.” The resulting ministry plan focused became largely a people-centred objective, addressing needs and interests of seniors, families, adults, youth, children – of all socioeconomic levels. What emerged was a renewed ministry and mission within the community, culminating in the opening on Emmaus Place in 2021.
Why “Emmaus” Place?
In Luke chapter 24, we read of Jesus walking and talking with people as they journey to the village of Emmaus. They did not recognize him. As they approached Emmaus, Jesus stayed among them to discuss many things. Later they wondered, “Who is this man?” When Jesus was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him… at this place called Emmaus.
We are called to serve in Jesus’ name whether others recognize him or not. At Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, we have said we are welcoming, accepting, caring, read to “walk with” our guests wherever they may be on their own personal journeys, offering support and friendship, sharing in whatever ways they want or need.
About Emmaus Place
Emmaus Place is a gorgeous mixed-use development in Langley, BC, sitting adjacent to the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Emmaus Place has access to Routley Park and shops like Moreno’s Market and Deli and Starbucks. This building includes 82 affordable rental homes for seniors, families, and individuals.
The rental housing at Emmaus Place is jointly owned with SVLC Langley Housing Society and independently operated by Catalyst Community Developments Society.
Emmaus Place Includes:
- 70 rental homes subject to a 55+ strata bylaw, designed with accessibility in mind. (Note: recent provincial housing changes mean this bylaw cannot ensure every occupant will be 55+, but the homes are intended for older adults.)
- 12 family-friendly townhomes, in both 2- and 3-bedroom formats
- Convenient transit access, scooter storage and resident parking
- Outdoor amenities including a rooftop terrace, indoor amenity room, playground, picnic area and garden

Discovery Station Preschool
Discovery Station Preschool was established in 2002 with the development of its unique early learning program. The preschool moved into its current location at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in the fall of 2003 and has continued to serve children and families in the community ever since.
In 2021, the preschool program transitioned to new ownership, ensuring the continuation of its long-standing commitment to providing quality early childhood education in a nurturing environment. The program remains dedicated to sharing God’s love with children and their families while fostering learning, growth, and development through meaningful preschool experiences.
Discovery Station Preschool is independently owned and operated, maintaining its established values, programming, and community-focused approach. The preschool is led by qualified Early Childhood Educators who hold current certifications, including First Aid and Criminal Record Checks, and are committed to providing a safe, caring, and engaging learning environment for all children.
