Music is a treasured gift from God and an essential part of our worship and faith life. Martin Luther spoke of music as a precious gift, second only to the Word of God, and believed that it has the power to proclaim the Gospel, strengthen faith, and bring joy to God’s people. Through song, instrumental music, and shared praise, our music ministry helps lead the congregation in worship, deepen spiritual connection, and celebrate God’s presence among us.
With an emphasis on congregational singing, we encourage all people to participate in worship through music. Our choir shares the gift of music throughout the church year and we are thankful for the members of the congregation who generously share their time and voices as part of the choir’s ministry.
Whether through choir participation, special musical offerings or congregational singing, our ministry seeks to inspire, encourage, and unite people in faith through the power of music.

Church Choir
Our church choir is a small but devoted group of singers, united by a love of music, singing and worship, and a commitment to serving our congregation through music. We joyfully share our gifts to enhance worship, celebrate faith, and bring our community together in praise.
The church choir meets weekly for rehearsal on Wednesday evenings from September to June and provides a choral anthem for Sunday morning worship services. An emphasis on traditional choral music is augmented with arrangements of traditional gospel and contemporary music.
Beyond our weekly ministry, the Church Choir is proud to host the Langley Christmas Choir, a seasonal community choir that brings singers together to celebrate the joy of Christmas through music.
Langley Christmas Choir
On an October Wednesday evening in 2023, a room full of singers from across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley gathered for the first rehearsal of the Langley Christmas Choir. Many singers were meeting for the very first time, but as they began to sing together, something remarkable happened. Along with the beautiful sound of voices joining in song came a sense of connection, joy, and shared purpose. New friendships were formed, confidence grew, and the gift of making music together came alive. Following sold-out concerts and overwhelmingly positive feedback from singers and audiences alike, the choir has become a treasured annual tradition.
The Langley Christmas Choir is now part of the music ministry at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and a mainstay in the local choral community. It has become a popular way to welcome the Christmas season. Each year, approximately 50 singers—many returning year after year alongside new participants—come together to rehearse choral Christmas music over seven weeks in the fall, culminating in a festive concert in early December.
Gail Suderman created this seasonal choir the year she started as Music Director at the church after hearing from singers in the broader community who missed the experience of singing in a choir. Inspired by these conversations, she shared the vision of a short-term Christmas choir with the pastor and church council, and with their enthusiastic support, the idea was set in motion. Choir rehearsals begin in October, with the final concert performance in early December.

Our Music Director is always happy to hear from singers with previous choral experience interested in singing in the Church Choir or the Langley Christmas Choir (or both!) Contact Gail at [Addy: gail.svlc | shaw] for further choir and/or registration information.
